Newest Products (As of December)

Current Cover Page for Music Magazine

The feedback that I received for this product stated that I needed to prevent the over abundance of dead space. It was also suggested that I change the tagline to "EQuality for EDM" which would match the style of my mast head.
Current Contents Page

The feedback for this product included the idea to fill in dead space, use more imagery and also ensure it follows a house style in harmony with the rest of my products, to do this I will most likely completely change the layout of this product in order to follow the conventions of other products in this genre.
Current Double Page Spread

For my feedback of this product I was advised to use more imagery to prevent dead space, also this layout for a double page spread does not follow the conventions of products typical of the genre and so I will completely change the layout and colour scheme in order to follow a complete house style. The font used is also fairly hard to read and so I will change this in a way that it is easily legible and also contributes to the house style.

Double Page Spread (Mock up)

I may change the background to a monochrome one allowing for the models to stand out more from the background.
For these two pages I may split them into two short biographies and then create a logo that will accompany them (in the above boxes).

Second magazine mock-up

This is the edited version of the background image, I chose to add a neon effect to the sky and finally add a poster effect to end up with this as the finished background image.

I may add a layer over the top of the model

Magazine Plan

Magazine Genre: I have chosen to create an EDM magazine that shares features of the rock magazine which I have previously analysed.

Possible magazine names:
  • The Equalizer
  • EDM Today
  • The Nightclub

Possible fonts for my magazine:

I intend to use Xero's Proof for my magazine masthead.

I like the idea of implementing an actual equalizer into the mast head / logo, such as found on the High Volume font.

Possible Colour Schemes:

I am likely going to use the second colour scheme for my header as it shows a large variation of colours.

Potential mast heads:

Photo plan

Photo Planning

For my cover photo I want my cover model to suit the genre of EDM, to do this I will have the model dressed in white with matching headphones that seem typical of the style, I may then take photos of a city to position in the background that reflects the social group that I am aiming to cater to.

For the contents page I hope you use a variety of images including some that I will graphically design myself (For example Band logos) I will then also dress the model in a way that will suit my chosen genre which could also reflect the images used on both the Cover and the Double Page Spread

On the double page spread I will also include images that I will myself design.

The State of The Music Magazine Industry

The state of the music magazine industry.

In recent years the number of music magazines sold has depreciated substantially in some cases such as in "NME" sales have dropped from 300,000 copies to as little as 13,995, this depreciation in sales occurred with the introduction of online articles and finding information through social media (such as Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr). Many magazines have adapted to this change such again as "NME" which took the transition into becoming a multi platform brand rather than a magazine. "NME" has spread onto platforms such as Spotify, Youtube, and Tumblr, allowing the brand to reach a wider audience than just that of the print edition previously sold.

I intend to possibly design pages for social media platforms to reflect the success of NME's adaptation to trending sites. Independent magazines are doing fairly well in recent times as they emphasize the quality of their content, a good example of this would be "Stack Magazines" who offer a subscription scheme that gives readers a new magazine every month which is delivered in a brown package meaning the cover is a surprise so to speak.

Features that are common to lead to a magazines success include:

  •  The offer of a subscription scheme
  •  Exclusive covers
  •  Social media management and advertising
  •  Following current trends

I will try to incorporate these features into my own magazine.

Researching current magazines - Colour Palette

The aim of this research was to find out conventional colour schemes for the EDM genre.

This cover follows a very warm colour scheme with darker colours that allow titles and the picture to stand out, this contrast works well as all the necessary information is easily readable. The use of varied colours, however, seems to draw the attention away from the foreground and makes you look more at the background yet still follows the conventions of this genre.

This cover follows a monochromatic colour scheme with the gold’s but also incorporates very dark colours to help draw out the article information. The gold’s used add a sense of sophistication to the cover which is not usually conventional to the EDM genre.

Researching Current Music Magazines (EDM)

In this post I will be analyzing magazines from my chosen genre, EDM. Through doing this I will be able to use the conventions for my own products.

Researching generic magazine conventions

Researching Current Music Magazines

The aim of this was to research into current music magazines, potentially from the same genre and to think about why they are created in this way to please their target audience. This will help when it comes to creating my own, professional styled magazine, and show me what features to include.

Kerrang! music magazine cover, contents and double page spread.

Classic Rock cover, contents and double page spread.

Q cover, contents and double page spread.
